story
hibi is a place for your words, made by people who believe a writing app should belong to the people who write in it.
where we started
hibi started when may wanted an app to keep track of her day to day, something like a journal or a mood tracker, because she kept losing track of her things.
on the side, she was writing blog posts for ryanaque.com, and writing all that markdown by hand was wearing her down. she tried obsidian, notion and plenty of others, but they were too complicated, cost money, or just didn’t fit how she works.
she also knows how many people live in obsidian, and she didn’t want hibi to ask anyone to start over. one of her goals was to support the tools and formats people already know, which is why it writes in typst and latex as well as markdown.
so she turned hibi into a writing app you can make your own. it’s extensible, with addons and themes, so it can fit your flow instead of the other way around. she loves designing things, so it had to look good. she’s a performance nerd, so it had to be fast.
that’s how hibi was born, and today it has 1,000 downloads.
what we believe
writing is personal. your words should live in plain files, in your own folders, in formats that will outlast any app, including this one.
the editor should be quiet and fast and get out of your way. nothing to hand over, nothing to lock you in.
we are not doing this alone
hibi started with one person, and it didn’t stay that way. other maintainers joined because they share the same vision: a writing app that is simple, powerful and yours.
they look after the linux, nix and windows versions, and hibi is better for every one of them. our beloved maintainers help make this project possible, along with the help of everyone else.
help us keep it growing
there is a lot left to build, and we would love to build it with you. it’s also may’s dream that she can work on hibi full time one day, and your support is what makes that dream feel possible.
if hibi sounds like the app you have been waiting for, the kindest thing you can do is star it on github. it helps other writers find it, and it tells us the work matters. then come say hi: join the discord to share ideas, ask questions, or just hang out with the people who make hibi.
led by a team who loves to make writing yours.
